Let the Battles Begin!

Let the Battles Begin!
The Star Wars™: Armada Tournament Rules Are Now Available

The Star Wars™: Armada Core Set is on its way to stores right now, and it's scheduled for release tomorrow!
Soon, you'll have your chance to command Imperial or Rebel fleets in the pursuit of glory or freedom, and it won't be long before you'll be able to test your mettle in competitive play. Spring Star Wars: Armada Tournament Kits are also on their way, and we encourage you to make the most of your Tournament Kits by hosting a Star Wars: Armada launch event!
Whether you plan on hosting a launch event or tournaments in the future, today also marks the release of the Star Wars: Armada Tournament Rules (pdf, 5.4 MB).

Armada Tournament Play

The Galactic Civil War wasn't won in a day. Even the destruction of the first Death Star didn't tip the balance far enough in the Rebellion's favor for them to claim victory. Accordingly, you'll find that the Armada tournament rules offer a long-term approach to the game's competitive play, even as they allow you to blast immediately into the hottest exchanges of laser fire and concussion missiles that you'll find anywhere in the galaxy.

As early as this weekend, you can launch into Armada Core Set tournaments. These require you to bring a fleet of 180 points or less and adhere to all the other standard Armada tournament rules. Then, when the first wave of expansions becomes available, Armada tournaments will shift to the utilization of 300-point fleets. Finally, with the arrival of the second wave of Armada expansion, the game will reach its cap at 400-point fleets.

Launch Your Fleet

Begin preparing for launch! Star Wars: Armada is coming, and your battles begin this weekend. Download theTournament Rules (pdf, 5.4 MB) and enjoy the upcoming Spring events!

Rules of Warfare

Rules of Warfare
New Star Wars™: Armada FAQ and Tournament Rules are Available

As massive Star Destroyers and Rebellion cruisers slowly draw within range of each other’s weapons, fleet admirals rush to dispense commands. These commands are guided by experience, training, and the rules of engagement, and they can mean the difference between life and death for the commanders and their crews.
In Star Wars™: Armada, admirals are able to learn from their mistakes, but it’s still important that you understand the rules of the game. Prepare for your next battle by downloading the new Star Wars: Armada FAQ (pdf, 4.4 MB) andtournament rules (pdf, 5.4 MB) today.

The FAQ will go into effect August 15th, 2015. The tournament rules will go into effect July 29th, 2015.

A Word from the Developer

Greetings, admirals!
This version of the FAQ includes a few card clarifications and a couple of important rules updates. We’ve clarified that when you’re attacking squadrons, each roll against a different squadron counts as a separate attack. This is why you can resolve cards like Point-Defense Reroute and Dominator against each squadron you attack, not just one. Also, there were some edge cases in ship targeting where attacks that didn’t seem like they should be legal were indeed legal. We’ve clamped down on that by adding the rule that line of sight is broken if your attack’s range is measured through one of the defender’s hull zones. Most players are already playing this way without realizing it; now it’s codified.
Thanks again to everyone who sends in rules questions!
James Kniffen

A Word from Organized Play

The Star Wars: Armada tournament rules have seen some minor updates. While the initial document was solid, our tournament software, currently in beta, has created the need to update how pairings and strength of schedule work.
Before we started work on our tournament software, stores and tournament organizers were often forced to run tournaments by hand. While many TOs have the math skills to run large tournaments with complicated tiebreakers, the time this adds to a tournament is significant and detrimental to players’ experiences. This limited the rules governing pairings and tiebreakers for our games in the past, but tournament software opens the possibilities of new methods and we have taken advantage of them to improve our tournaments.
With our tournament software in the middle of its beta phase and seeing use out in the world, it’s become important to inform players of the new pairings and strength of schedule calculations in a wider manner. While not all players may participate in a tournament run with the software just yet, this addition will inform them of what will be a universal rule once it is released widely across the world.
Finally, this update includes changes that align the language of the tournament rules across Star Wars: Armada,Imperial Assault, and X-Wing™. There haven’t been any actual changes to the rules, but it is the cause of various rewordings you may find throughout the document.
We look forward to seeing the continued growth of this great game through National Championship season
and beyond!

What Is The Massing at Sullust?

FFG's The Massing at Sullust is a special preview event, showcasing the second wave of Armada starships and squadrons at exclusive preview tournaments taking place the weekend of October 2nd – 4th.

How Does It Work?

Each retailer participating in The Massing at Sullust preview event will run an Armada tournament during the weekend of October 2nd – 4th. Players will bring standard 300-point fleets and compete through three Swiss-style rounds, following all the standard rules described in the official ArmadaTournament Rules document (pdf, 5.4 MB).
Then after the Swiss rounds, the top two players will confront each other in a final match of epic proportions!
Both players will set aside the fleets that they played throughout the Swiss rounds and will build new, 400-point fleets that utilize the Wave II starships and squadrons. One player will construct an Imperial fleet that includes theImperial-class Star Destroyer and Raider-class corvette, as well as at least one of the Imperial squadrons from the Rogues and Villains Squadron Pack. The other player will construct a Rebel fleet that includes the MC80 star cruiser and MC30c frigate, as well as one or more of the Rebel squadrons from the Rogues and Villains Squadron Pack. Both players will then be able to complete their 400-point fleets by adding starships, squadrons, upgrades, and objectives drawn from their existing collections, plus those from the Wave II expansions under their command.

A Note About the Release of Wave II and The Massing at Sullust

When we first announced the upcoming release of Armada Wave II, we anticipated that its expansions would be available to retailers by the third quarter of 2015. However, due to an unavoidable manufacturing delay, we have had to push back the wave's release. We are now on schedule to see Wave II released in the fourth quarter of 2015.
In the meantime, we have been delighted by the tremendous momentum Armada has been gaining with its fans and in Organized Play as its massive battles have begun to reshape the galaxy. We are also aware of the fan community's anticipation of the game's second wave, and we have decided to air freight some of the first ships off the run. We're truly excited by all that Wave II promises to bring to the game, and we want you to share our excitement for these ships and squadrons as soon as possible. These are the starships and squadrons players will have the chance to fly and win at The Massing at Sullust.

Execute Your Battle Plan

Retailers, remember that we have a limited number of The Massing at Sullust kits, and registration for this exclusive preview event closes on September 8th. Submit your application today to host one of these exciting, world premiere events!

2016 STAR WARS: Armada Store Championships

2016 STAR WARS: Armada Store Championships
Apply by October 16th

Bring weapons of immense firepower to your community with a 2016 Star Wars™: Armada Store Championship.
Retailers are invited to apply now for next year’s Store Championship season, running from January 1st through March 31st, 2016. Store Championships are local events with a competitive atmosphere and serve as the first step toward our annual World Championships in November.
If you are a United States retailer or tournament organizer interested in hosting a 2016 Store Championship event, please contact our sales team before October 16th 23:59 CST (Central Standard Time) to be considered.
If you are a retailer outside of the United States, please contact your distributor to apply to host a Store Championship or ask questions. International applications must be submitted before October 16th 23:59 CST (Central Standard Time) to be considered.

How Do Store Championships Fit into Organized Play?

Our Championship events are a series of events that start on a local scale (Store Championships) and grow all the way into the pinnacle of international play (World Championships) over the course of each year. With each successive event the competition becomes fiercer, the prize pool becomes larger, and the tournaments become bigger. Store Championships are the event that kicks it all off and all stores are invited to apply.
Unlike an event run with our seasonal Tournament Kits or a special event like the Assault at Imdaar Alpha X-Wing™ preview event, each Championship feeds into the following event. The winner of each Store Championship receives a first-round bye at the Regional Championship of their choice; the winner of each Regional Championship
receives a first-round bye at their National Championship; and the winner of each National Championship receives
a first-round bye at the Star Wars: Armada World Championship! You will find many players in your area excited
to attend Store Championships in their quest to get a jump on their competition for Regional Championships
and beyond.

What Does Competitive Level Mean?

The Star Wars: Armada tournament rules outlines a structure of defining and categorizing the various tournaments run throughout the year in order to give players and tournament organizers a better idea of what to expect when heading to a tournament.
Tournaments can be classified as a casual, competitive, or premier tournament. While most tournaments run with our Tournament Kits are casual events, Store Championships are competitive-level events. From the Star Wars: Armada tournament rules:
Competitive events require players to have general knowledge of a game’s rules. While experienced players will come to these events to compete for prizes, players should not be punished for their lack of understanding in the finer points of Star Wars: Armada rules. Players can come to these events expecting a consistent experience from store to store. This tier includes Store Championships and unique, one-off FFG-sanctioned events.
For more information on the three tiers of tournaments, check out the Star Wars: Armada tournament rules on our website.

Store Championship Prizes

While many players will come to Star Wars: Armada Store Championships to compete for the Regional Championship bye awarded to the winner, there are other exclusive prizes up for grabs. Each kit contains enough prizes for the top 32 players.

  • Champion: The winner receives a Store Championship plaque and a card granting one first-round bye at a Regional Championship of the player’s choice.

  • Top Four: The top four players each receive one challenge coin (plus one for the judge/TO).

  • Top Eight: The top eight players each receive one set of acrylic range rulers (plus one set for the judge/TO).

  • Top Thirty-Two: The top thirty-two players each receive one Raider I-class Corvette alternate art card (plus one for the judge/TO). (not pictured)

A Commander’s Guidebook

A Commander’s Guidebook
New Star Wars™: Armada FAQ and Tournament Rules are Available

Different commanders find inspiration and wisdom from different sources. Sometimes it’s a journal of notes while for others it is a respected elder. No matter the source, behind almost all successful commanders lies a font of knowledge that helped them along.
Improve your knowledge and prepare for your next battle by downloading the new Star Wars™: Armada FAQ (pdf, 5.8 MB) today. There will be no changes to the tournament rules at this time. You can find the current version of thetournament rules (pdf, 5.4 MB) in its usual spot on the Star Wars: Armada website.

These changes will go into effect on October 28th, 2015.

A Word from the Designer

Greetings, admirals!
This update to the Star Wars: Armada FAQ is a simple one. It addresses a few questions that have arisen, such as how to resolve the situation of a ship overlapping a large number of squadrons. Most notably, we’ve clarified that you can indeed wait to see the results of an evade token’s reroll before spending another defense token. Also, we’ve made a ruling on the interaction between XI7 Turbolasers and Advanced Projectors, opting to favor the turbolasers over the powerful defensive retrofit in the interests of future game balance.

A Step Forward

A Step Forward
An Explanation of the New Round Structure for FFG Organized Play Games

Welcome players!
In the newest tournament rules updates there is a change to the number of Swiss rounds and size of the single-elimination cut for competitive tournaments for most of our games. We wanted to take a moment to explain the reasons behind these changes.

First and foremost, we want to stress that the tables for number of Swiss rounds and the ensuing cut to single-elimination that you see in a game’s tournament rules are only required for official competitive-level tournaments, like the upcoming Store Championships. For any unofficial casual or competitive-level tournament, organizers should choose the number of rounds and possible cut to single-elimination, and clearly inform all players before the event begins. However, if these changes have their desired effect, we believe that you will see more and more unofficial competitive-level tournaments utilizing them.
We recently sat down to design some unique special events, and we quickly realized that the structure which was in use was problematic. It was originally conceived for events where matches always have one winner and one loser, and players are ranked and paired only by their number of wins. However, nearly all of our games function differently, awarding points instead of straight wins or losses or as part of a match which cannot conclude in the allotted time.

So, we took a step back and clarified our understanding of the purpose of both Swiss and single-elimination rounds. The number of rounds and ensuing cut to single-elimination is supposed to accomplish a goal: finding the players whose choices before and during the Swiss rounds led to the best performances, then creating exciting, high-stakes games to eliminate all but one overall winner.
After talking with competitive players, consulting the game developers, and running simulations and trial runs, we found that we could meet that goal while creating a better experience for all tournament participants. The changes you see in these updates are modeled to fulfill that philosophy more accurately for each game.
The new design model takes three slightly different approaches for three different attendance sizes at official competitive-level tournaments.

  • Small tournaments offer a number of Swiss rounds that provide a substantial play experience but do not conclude with single-elimination.

  • At tournaments with moderate attendance levels, the number of Swiss rounds and the ensuing cut to single-elimination places a greater emphasis on tiebreakers for players without the maximum amount of tournament points.

  • With large tournaments, we are complimenting a reduced dependance on Swiss rounds with an increased size of cut to single-elimination.

We strongly believe that these changes to the number of Swiss rounds and cut to single-elimination will have a positive impact on every participant’s experience at competitive-level tournaments.

Thank you again for your participation in official Fantasy Flight Game Organized Play. 2016 will be an amazing year of exceptional events, and we look forward to delighting you all year long!

The Next Step in Organized Play
The Next Step in Organized Play
The Shape of FFG Organized Play in 2017

From year-round casual tournaments and the first Store Championships to the pinnacle of the World Championships, Fantasy Flight Games Organized Play invites you to make new friends, travel to new places, and spend time playing your favorite games. There are currently seven games supported by FFG Organized Play: A Game of Thrones: The Card GameAndroid: NetrunnerImperial AssaultStar Wars™: ArmadaStar Wars™: The Card Game,Warhammer 40,000: Conquest, and X-Wing™. We’re thrilled to continue growing the program, and today, we want to outline the exciting changes you can expect to see from FFG Organized Play, beginning in November 2016!
Whether you just want a fun way to spend your afternoons or you aspire to be a top competitive player, there’s an event for you. Supplemented with casual tournaments held throughout the year, FFG Organized Play offers a competitive hierarchy that begins with Store Championships and continues through Regional Championships, National Championships, and finally, the World Championships at our headquarters in Roseville, Minnesota.

FFG Organized Play not only offers you the chance to play the games you love at any competitive level; it also gives you the opportunity to win unique prizes, no matter where your tournament falls in the competitive hierarchy. From cards featuring gorgeous alternate art, to high-quality acrylic tokens, to playmats for you to display and protect your cards during a game, every tournament offers fantastic prizes for the victors.

What can I expect to see in 2017 Organized Play?

As our Organized Play program grows, we want to devote more time, attention, and focus to each of our games. To that end, we are introducing a second tournament season of Organized Play games. Beginning immediately after the 2016 World Championships in November, we will split our Organized Play games into two tracks. One track will contain all of our Star Wars™ games with Organized Play support—Imperial AssaultStar Wars: Armada, Star Wars: The Card Game, and X-Wing. The other track will contain A Game of Thrones: The Card GameAndroid: Netrunner, andWarhammer 40,000: Conquest

The current FFG Organized Play games will be split into two tracks.

Beginning at the end of 2016, these two tracks will move to separate schedules. Store Championships and Regional Championships for both tracks will take place during different parts of the calendar year, and the games will also feature completely distinct World Championship events. World Championships for both tracks will still take place at our headquarters in Roseville, Minnesota—in early May for Star Wars games and early November for all other Organized Play titles.
Splitting our Organized Play games across two tracks ultimately allows us to focus more attention on all of our games, benefiting the event size, available side events, and scheduling during both World Championships. World Championship victors will continue to receive the greatest prize in gaming—the chance to design a card for their game! What’s more, beginning at the 2017 World Championships, all World Champions will now receive travel and lodging for the next year’s World Championships.

The two tracks of FFG Organized Play will also feature different seasons for their Store Championships and Regional Championships. For both tracks, the Store Championship season will begin immediately after the corresponding World Championships and run for the next four months. In other words, the Store Championship season for Imperial AssaultStar Wars: Armada, Star Wars: The Card Game, and X-Wing will begin in May 2017, while the Store Championship season for A Game of Thrones: The Card GameAndroid: Netrunner, and Warhammer 40,000: Conquestwill begin in November 2016 and continue through the end of February 2017.

A visual representation of the calendar for non-Star Wars Organized Play games. For more information on European Championships and National Championships, continue reading.

After a track’s Store Championship season, there will be a two month break, and then the Regional Championship season will begin and run over the next four months. The Regional Championship season for Imperial AssaultStar Wars: Armada, Star Wars: The Card Game, and X-Wing will begin in November 2016, while Regional Championship season for A Game of Thrones: The Card GameAndroid: Netrunner, and Warhammer 40,000: Conquest will begin in May 2017.
As in previous years, Store Championship winners will receive a first-round bye (a certificate that grants you a free win in the first round of the tournament) for use at a Regional Championship in the following season. Regional Championship winners will receive a first-round bye towards the corresponding National Championship, good for one year after the Regional Championship season’s conclusion. Regional Championship winners can also claim a reserved seat at the upcoming World Championship for their game!

This new, two-track model will take effect immediately after the 2016 World Championships. This means that beginning in November of this year, we will launch the Regional Championship season for all Star Wars Organized Play games and the Store Championship season for all other Organized Play games.

What else can I expect to see in the 2017 Organized Play Season?

Although the primary change coming in 2017 is the addition of a second Organized Play track, there are a number of other changes that will arrive to Fantasy Flight Games Organized Play in 2017.
First, the number of Tournament Kits that retailers can purchase throughout the year will be expanded to feature four unique kits per year, rather than three. Each kit and its tournaments will correspond to a quarter of the calendar year, and they will be available at any time during that quarter. At one of the tournaments run using these kits, you’ll have the chance to win a series of beautiful alternate art cards and a set of high-quality tokens. Expanding the number of Tournament Kits per year allows the tournament prizes to rotate more often, offering fresh prizes and new reasons to compete every few months!

Another change to the 2017 Organized Play format is that National Championships will no longer be confined to a certain part of the year. Instead, a National Championship can be held at any point during the year, allowing these events to be hosted at some of the most high-profile conventions and location around the world. If you win a National Championship, you gain a first-round bye and a reserved seat for that game’s next World Championship, although there is a cutoff two months before the World Championship. If you win a National Championship after the two-month cutoff, your bye and reserved seat will be applied to the next year’s World Championship.
In the United States, the National Championships for all Organized Play games—both Star Wars and other games—will take place at Origins Game Fair in Columbus, Ohio. Similarly, the North American Championships for all Organized Play games will take place at Gen Con Indy.
Finally, we are proud to announce the institution of European Championships, the highest-level Organized Play tournament in Europe. Beginning in late 2017, these events will offer prestige and amazing prizes to European players. The winner of a European Championship will receive travel and hotel to the next World Championship for the corresponding game, in addition to a reserved seat and a first-round bye. Our mission is to support and embrace a global approach to Organized Play, and these European Championships are an important step towards achieving that dream. Dates and locations will be announced as we plan and confirm events with our European partners.

A Bright Future

At Fantasy Flight Games, we’re very excited to share our games with you through the medium of Organized Play, and we think that these new changes will allow us to focus more time, attention, and energy on our Organized Play experience. We can’t wait for the exciting new changes that will come as we move into 2017, and we hope to see you there!

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to reveal the prizes of the 2016 Star Wars™: Armada Regional Championships!

Designed to draw players from a wide area, a Regional Championship is the place to be for competitors who are hoping to make their path towards a 2017 National Championship or even the 2017 World Championship. What are the Prizes for the 2016 Star Wars: Armada Regional Championships?

  • Top 16 - The top sixteen players will each receive a set of double sided acrylic Brace tokens.

  • Top 8 - The top eight players will be able to prepare their armaments with a set of sparkling attack dice. Four of each dice!

Star Wars: Armada Developers

The Star Wars: Armada development team is excited to release FAQ Version 3.2.1, an update that contains five errata to existing cards, a rules errata for flotilla ships, and several updates to existing clarifications.
Card Errata

The card errata found in FAQ Version 3.2.1 are updates for balance. These changes are intended to help promote greater list parity and diversity for competitive-tier Star Wars: Armada fleets. To support this, the Bomber Command Center,   Demolisher,   General Rieekan,  and Turbolaser Reroute Circuits upgrade cards and the Major Rhymer squadron card all have updates to the wordings of their abilities. Overall, these changes reflect an effort to introduce additional risk and decision-making for abilities that previously enabled extremely powerful combos or repetitive use with no downside.

Bomber Command Center

Bomber Command Center has provided reliability to bomber squadrons, especially squadrons with a single die in their battery armament. This has had the positive effect on squadron-focused fleets that we sought. However, the efficiency of overlapping Bomber Command Centers combined with the inherent benefits of flotillas has reinforced the dominance of fleets that deal damage primarily through squadrons.

For that reason, this card’s effect gains an additional restriction that reads “A squadron cannot resolve more than 1 ‘Bomber Command Center’ card per attack.” The effect remains a powerful base-level benefit, but having multiple Bomber Command Centers now provides redundancy rather than certainty.

Demolisher

Demolisher is a powerful card and has been part of the game’s competitive scene from the beginning. While this card is unique, when combined with the Engine Techs upgrade card it enables one of the game’s most powerful combos. This factors heavily into both factions’ list-building and initiative considerations, so much so that opponents must plan to sacrifice ships rather than outmaneuver Demolisher.

The update to this card is minor, but introduces some additional counter play and risk. The card now reads: “During your activation, you can perform 1 of your attacks after you execute your first maneuver.” This change means that Demolisher can no longer perform its attack after the maneuver granted by Engine Techs. Demolisher can still pounce from long range and attack, but it is much harder for it to avoid all attacks before doing so.

General Rieekan

General Rieekan has become a popular choice of competitive players in Star Wars: Armada. His ability radically alters sacrifice play and—when paired with ace fighter squadrons—has created one of the game’s defining fleet archetypes. While this is very thematic, it has further combined with the activation benefits of flotillas to make General Rieekan lists extremely difficult to defeat in competitive play as well as crowding out other fleet-building choices for both factions.

The change in General Rieekan’s effect wording is minor but significantly increases the risk involved in using him: "Once per round, when a friendly ship or friendly unique squadron is destroyed, it remains in the play area and is treated as if it was not destroyed until the end of the Status Phase.” This change doesn't negate Rieekan's utility, but requires more careful management of casualties. It especially changes some of the tactics for confronting Rieekan fleets that use multiple small ships and aces, as destroying more than one unit during a round will overwhelm Rieekan’s effect.

Turbolaser Reroute Circuits

Turbolaser Reroute Circuits have dramatically increased the value of small ships’ attacks, especially the CR90 Corvette A and MC30c Scout Frigate.  However, this has also compounded the power of fleets focused around multiple small ships, which already enjoy a significant activation advantage. Bringing two arcs to bear on an enemy is a major tactic in Star Wars: Armada, and nimble CR90’s and MC30’s are able to further exploit Turbolaser Reroute Circuits as a dramatic force multiplier. The cost of spending an additional evade token is minor compared to guaranteeing an additional four damage across two attacks.

The change to this card is minor but adds an additional restriction: “While attacking, you may exhaust this card and spend 1 evade defense token to change 1 red die to a face with a crit icon or 2 hit icons.” This effect’s guaranteed damage is still powerful, but this change provides more firepower parity between fleets composed of many small ships and those focused around fewer, larger ships.

Major Rhymer

Major Rhymer is the single most indispensable unit for squadron-centered Imperial fleets for good reason. His effect enables an extremely long threat range for squadron commands as well as setting up a dangerous passive-threat zone during the Squadron Phase. While this effect gives the Empire’s bomber squadrons their own signature anti-ship tactic, it also combines with the intel and escort keywords to dramatically reduce counter-play strategies. Major Rhymer’s ubiquity also prevents alternative fleet-building choices for the Empire.

This squadron’s effect now reads: “Friendly squadrons at distance 1 can attack enemy ships at close range using all dice in their battery armament.” This substantially reduces Major Rhymer’s range benefit and makes opponents’ interception strategies easier. However, Major Rhymer’s bombers can still outrange the engagement distance of enemy squadrons.

Flotilla Rules Errata

Of all the additions to Star Wars: Armada’s competitive scene, flotilla ships have had the greatest underlying impact since their introduction. Flotillas have provided inexpensive additional activations, an additional source of squadron commands, and significant effects through Fleet Support upgrade cards. While they have proven to be vital support ships, the effect of flotillas on activation economy has undermined the competitive value of many fleet combinations. This tendency has only been compounded by the ability of flotillas to serve as flagships and allow the game’s commanders to avoid the main battle with little cost.

For these reasons, the rules for flotillas now include an additional restriction for this ship type: “A flotilla cannot equip a commander upgrade card.” Although this is a minor change for flotillas, it restores much of the risk to commanders and raises the effective price of keeping a flagship out of danger.

Download the new Star Wars: Armada FAQ now to read the entire update before it goes into effect on June 26th. If you're planning on playing in a Store Championship, make sure to read the errata so you're prepared! Players attending a Store Championship before June 26th can still find the previous FAQ on the Star Wars: Armada page..

As always, game rules, tournament regulations, and other support materials for Star Wars: Armada can be found on our Star Wars: Armada page.
